The plot is based on John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel of the same name. In the early 20th century, in the fertile Salinas Valley, California, the fates of two families—the Trasks and the Hamiltons—intertwine. The Trask lineage is full of tragedies and conflicts, echoing the biblical motifs of the story of Cain and Abel. Patriarch Adam goes from a harsh childhood to complex relationships with his own sons, twins Caleb and Aaron. Tensions arise between the brothers, driven by jealousy, rivalry, and guilt, gradually escalating into a destructive struggle. The Hamilton family is led by the charismatic Samuel, an immigrant from Ireland known for his wit and hard work. His life experience and wisdom contrast sharply with the dramatic turmoil of the Trasks\' lives.
