Fifteen years after the uprising, the Republic of Gilead—occupying the former territory of the United States—has become even more isolated, with its laws growing increasingly oppressive. Agnes Mackenzie, a student at Aunt Lydia’s elite preparatory school for the daughters of high-ranking commanders and officials, is tasked with helping a new arrival, Daisy, adapt after coming to Gilead from Canada. A life-changing friendship soon blossoms between the two girls. Daisy’s outsider perspective helps Agnes realize just how cruel and unjust their dystopian society truly is.
